career opportunity of a philosophy student.

INTRODUCTION
There have been questions on the importance of a degree in philosophy, as lots of people see philosophy as one of the least important course. This paper is geared towards bringing out the beauty of philosophy and its value. To achieve this, we shall examine, the impact of philosophy on philosophy students, accompanied with the career opportunities of students of philosophy.

Beauty and Impact of philosophy on philosophy students
A degree in Philosophy is a valuable qualification with the ability to think clearly and reason logically, to expound and evaluate arguments and search for coherent principles of thought [1] philosophy sharpens one’s ability to speak and write in clear terms, well-articulated and incisive manner.[2] It equally teaches one how to think, analyze and communicate ideas in an understandable, balanced and well thought-out manner.[3]
Studying philosophy helps one in the following:
  • Analyzing and constructing sound arguments;
  • distinguishing fine differences between views and finding common ground;
  • presenting ideas convincingly through well-constructed, systematic arguments;
  • writing clearly and persuasively;
  • generating ideas and coming up with solutions to problems;
  • being open to new ideas and ways of thinking.[4]

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES OF PHILOSOPHY STUDENTS
Philosophy as a discipline is an excellent preparation for a career in law, religion, business, international diplomacy, social work, medical management or writing as well as post-graduate education.[5] Graduates of philosophy can work in the following areas:

law
The ability to think and write clearly, to analyze and present arguments, is highly valued in the law profession,[6] although specialized roles, such as a solicitor or barrister, are reserved for those with legal training and qualifications (e.g. LLB, JD, LLM), graduates of philosophy, can enter the industry, and work in departments such as; research, secretarial, paralegal, etc, with the potential to develop their legal training on the job.[7]

Journalism And Writing
Journalism and writing are natural fit for philosophy students. Both professions lean heavily on the advanced communication and language skills one develops while studying philosophy. While journalists and writers typically have expertise in both written and verbal communication techniques, they may also rely on the critical-thinking, analytical reasoning, and research skills they learn while studying philosophy. This include the production of magazines, books, newspapers and academic journals and other forms of publishable media.[8]
Job options include;
·         Editorial Assistant: as an editorial assistant, one can work for a firm or an institution – by sometimes representing the company, writing editorials, reading and editing manuscripts, and organize schedules. [9]
·         Paralegal: A paralegal performs legal work under the supervision of lawyers such as research and writing legal documents.[10]
Public Policy: Public policy involves analyzing and solving problems that affect many people, often at the government level. Working in public policy involves policy research, communicating ideas with others, and creating arguments, as well as unraveling the arguments of others. All of these skills use the philosophy ability to create and differentiate between good and bad arguments, along with research and writing skills.[11]

Careers in the public sector
Careers in the public sector are diverse, encompassing all state-funded roles within a country – for example, roles in local/national government and national health services, civil services, police forces and the armed forces. Many administrative and other office-based roles are found across all of these areas.[12] A graduate of philosophy can actually fit into any of the above areas.

Careers in psychotherapy and counselling
Given the analytical and methodical skills acquired on a philosophy degree, philosophy graduates may also be well-matched candidates for careers in psychotherapy and counselling. These roles, although often requiring a specific vocational qualification, do not commonly require a postgraduate degree. The most vital qualities within this field are excellent communication skills, knowledge of psychological processes and an ability to empathize. The majority of work will be client-facing, allowing you to work closely with individuals, couples, families or groups, to help others overcome emotional and psychological barriers using various methods of therapy and discussion.[13]
other health departments include;
·         psychiatry
·         ophthalmology
·         orthopedics
·         dentistry
·         neurology
·         cancer research etc.[14]
NON-PROFIT
a graduate in philosophy can work for non-profit sector, this include working for a cause, which can be anything, including education, hunger, the arts, or the environment. Working for a non-profit can involve outreach, communications, program development, or volunteer coordination. Philosophy majors interested in ethics and social or political philosophy get to put their writing and speaking skills to good use at a non-profit.[15]

CONCLUSION
We have been able to see the beauty of philosophy, its impact on philosophy students and the many careers and job opportunity of students of philosophy. From the above, it is clear that philosophy is not among the least course in the university, because it is one of the course that sharpens one’s way of reasoning, way of speaking, writing, research etc, philosophy doesn’t just prepare students for a particular field, rather it builds them to fit into lots of field, we then can conclude that philosophy is one of the most important course in the university and not the other way round.
