PLACE, SPACE, AND VOID
Nature concerns
itself with the principles of motion, Explicit to these principles are the
concepts of place, space and void. This paper seeks to analyze the place of
these very important terms in the science of nature.
PLACE :Motion occurs in place. The concept
of place is described in the following ways:
1.The “from which”
and “to which” of local motion, 2.The immobile surface of that which primarily
contains a body, 3.The immediate boundary of a thing, 4.It can be left behind
by the thing and it is separable, 5.It is constant and does not change.
Everything in
nature has a place. Place takes precedence to the thing, this is because it can
exist without the thing. The thing however cannot exist without a place. The
place does not pass out of existence but the thing does. There are two kinds of
place, primary (proximate) and common. The primary place refers to our
immediate surroundings, while the common refers to take larger area, more than
our proximate surroundings.
DOES PLACE EXIST? It has been shown that
place exists. The following have been
given as arguments for the existence of place: (1) From local motion: Things
naturally move from one place to another, showing the existence of place.(2)
The increase and diminution of a thing shows that place exists. (3) From Void
and space: Since in or around a thing, there is a place devoid of anything,
therefore place exists.
SPACE:
Space is an absolute dimension that does not change. Space does not
change the dimensions of the body that fills it. It does not affect the state
of the body. It is the generality of places but when marked out, it becomes a
place. It is argued that there can be neither duration nor succession in space.
VOID: Change of place is impossible without
void. The existence of motion shows that there should be void to receive the
thing being moved. This is because a thing cannot be moved into what is full
otherwise there will be two bodies. It is interesting to note that place is in
a space while a thing is in a place. Void is the remaining part of a place in a
space not occupied by a thing.
