GREGORY NAZIANZEN, ORATION27: THE FIRST THOLOGICAL ORATION
GREGORY NAZIANZEN, ORATION27: THE FIRST THOLOGICAL ORATION
According to this text, the author who
bitterly refutes the untutored approach to theology of certain thinkers of his
time, Philosophizing about God does not belong to all persons, because it is
permitted only to those who have been examined and have a solid footing in
contemplation, and who have been previously purified in soul and body, or at
the very least are being purified. He emphasizes that philosophizing about God
is exclusively reserved and can be done perfectly when we are free from all
manners of disturbances internal and external alike and from that which rules
us (the rational or reason). Philosophizing about God for him is not for all
persons and it cannot be done carelessly. It must be done within and in the
context of strict discipline for it is not so cheaply acquired. It is not to be
overstretched that is to say philosophizing about God is not to be done before
any audience and must not be full of too much argument.
