Domini, by Pope Benedict XVI.
The document Verbum Domini is Pope Benedict XVI
response to the synod of bishops concerning the discourse of the word of God in
the life and the mission of the church. The Pope highlighted the need to renew
the faith of the church in the word of God and this will be possible by being
acquaintance with the Holy Scripture.
The document is divided into three sections namely; Verbum
Dei, Verbum in ecclesia, Verbum Mundo. The first section talks about the
incarnation of the word; and of Christianity as a religion of the word of God, and
the word of God being alive and active. More so, the word of God have to be
properly interpreted in the guidance of the church’ tradition. It furthered
highlighted the importance of Jesus’ role in the salvation history of human
kind.
The second section talks about the scriptural
relationship to liturgy, the document emphasizes on the need of placing Christ
at the centre of homilies. Also, songs
used during the liturgy should be connected deeply to the scripture, therefore
those songs handed down by the church’ tradition is highly recommendable.
The last section talked about the need
of reviving the missionary consciousness of the people of God. It
stresses the need of proclaiming and spreading the good news to everyone,
especially the youths, because they are the future of the church. The document
explained that, it is not just enough preaching a word of
consolation, but a preaching that will be striking is solely needed for
conversion.
